For Teachers

If you would like the StarLab to come to your school, there are a few things I need from you to make it happen:

1. Space: The StarLab requires a room at least 21'x21' and 12' high ceilings to set up in.

2. Power: The StarLab blower uses a standard plug, & needs access to an outlet

3. Schedule: In general, the StarLab will come on to the school on Tuesday morning, and there will be presentations for the students throughout the day on Tuesday and Thursday. Each presentation is approximately 30 minutes, and we need to allow 10-15 minutes between presentations. A sample elementary schedule is available to help you see how these presentations may fit into a school day. For secondary school, we will work with the regular bell schedule.
If the principal is amenable, I would like to have the building open in the evenings Tuesday - Friday for StarLab presentations to the general public.
This is subject to change, and possible to customize.

If it is necessary to split the class in half, we can accommodate that, but need to know in advance. It is highly recommended that if you do not have an assistant, get a parent volunteer to be present on the day of the StarLab visit to assist with crowd control. A presentation is about half an hour long, and you will be sitting on the floor.

5. Fee: At the moment, there is no charge. I am volunteering my time because I strongly believe Cache Valley needs a planetarium. On January 17, 2009 there will be a meeting in the Logan City Library at 4:00 pm to discuss forming a nonprofit corporation for the purposes of running a planetarium on an ongoing basis. The grant I won will only cover one semester of running expenses. Once the nonprofit corporation is formed, there will be a nominal fee to cover future upgrades and running expenses.

6. Curriculum: I need to know the grade levels of the students who will be visiting the StarLab, and which subjects you would like covered. We are in the process of developing programs aligned to the Utah State Core, and I would like input from teachers, especially on non-science subjects.

NOTE: There are currently seven cylinders which we can develop programs around:
Native American | Plate Tectonics | Weather | Constellation | Greek Mythology
Northern Starfield | and the Radio Sky cylinder set
For sixth grade classes, there are 4 modules, one for each of the Astronomy standards: Seasons, Moon Phases, Scale & Technology, and the Solar System. A half hour presentation will cover two of these.
For third grade classes there are 2 modules, one for the Astronomy standards, and one on the Navajo stars which ties in to the Native Cultures standards.

7. Recording: The students should each bring in a hard surface to write on, some paper, and a pencil or pen.

8. ADA: Please let me knowIf there is anyone in the group with special needs, and what sort of adaptations they need.

Please email me at info@cachestarhouse.org or call me at 801-971-0587 to schedule a week for the StarLab to come to your school.
